Controls

This game will use 4 attack buttons. Different characters have different types of attack. Flash does all punches, Superman does mostly punches, Scorpion does a mixture, etc. The game's default layout will use both an analog stick and the d-pad. One will be used for moving forward, backward, jumping, ducking, and move input, and the other will be used for sidestepping.

There will also be a control scheme that uses a more standard layout. In that scheme, control will be very similar to the last three 3D games.

Mortal Kombat Characters

Klose Kombat

Not much is known about Klose Kombat as of yet. From the initial trailer released for the game, it appears there is a mode where the character fill the screen. The moves we've seen so far in this mode include basic punches, a roundhouse that turns the opponent around a little, an upperct that stuns the opponent but does not knock them away, and a downward punch that floors the opponent, followed by a stomp to the back of the head.

This footage suggests in Klose Kombat gameplay will shift from knocking people up or away (such as a traditional uppercut or roundhouse respectively) and instead focuses on turning your opponent around/stunning your opponent and knocking your opponent to the ground.

Falling Kombat

Only 2 clips have been shown of Falling Kombat. It appears to be a mode where, as characters fall from one arena level to another, the character on top has the ability to attack while the character on the bottom has a way to counter/reverse the opponent. Based on footage so far, this is reminiscent of Marduk's mounted punches from Tekken.

Rage

A meter is located underneath each character's energy bar. As a character takes damage and does moves, that character's rage meter fills. Energy from the Rage meter can be used to break out of combos, similar to MKD's combo breakers. Once the Rage meter is filled, the character goes into Rage Mode. In Rage Mode the character does not react the same to getting hit. The character no-sells attacks.

Gameplay Mechanics

Below is where core aspects of the gameplay engine will be listed. These are not named features like Klose Kombat and Falling Kombat, but instead nuances of how the gameplay engine works.

Crossups

In demos of the game, special moves can apparently follow crossups mid-move. For instance, in a video, Sonya is seen beginning a move as a character jumps. When her opponent crosses over her, her animation reverses, mid special move, allowing the attack to still hit.
