Rain first appeared as a purple male ninja in the intro to Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 for the arcade. His name was written strangely in the energy bar. Instead of being slanted text with a slight antialiasing effect like the other characters, his name was written in solid white letters using horizontal and vertical lines.

In the intro, Rain would do various moves. What he actually did in the intro depended on whether a human player had recently won or lost a game. For instance, there is a clip of Rain falling over dead that appears if the player had lost. And there are clips of him doing Reptile's victory stance if the player had won.

The 16 bit versions of UMK3 and the console and PC versions of MKT featured Rain as a full playable character. He had a common move set for those games: a ball of water that allowed him to capture and move his opponent, a lightning bolt that knocked his opponent into the air, and a roundhouse kick that was very fast and that knocked his opponent off one side of the screen and back on the other.

Rain also later appeared in Mortal Kombat Armageddon with a completely new look and a new set of moves.
